What is Preventative Dentistry?

This involves specific noninvasive procedures in a healthy mouth to ensure it stays healthy. Preventative dentistry is for everyone especially for children.

What does it involve?

Primarily it involves a visit to your dentist at least twice annually even if you do not have a problem. It is important to note that gum disease and dental decay initially are painless. If diagnosed early at your annual visits your dentist can prevent it from becoming a problem.

How does it work?

Check-ups/Maintenance

All big problems start with a little problem. Regular check-ups allows the chance to correct the little problems.

Regular Cleanings

Cleanings will prevent plaque from causing active gum disease. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to brush and floss correctly and will point out possible problems, such as impacted wisdom teeth, food traps, excess tartar build-up, gum disease and more sensitive periodontitis.

Dietary Advice

Your dentist will pinpoint the sugary foods in your diet which cause decay or deterioration of teeth.

Bruxism (Tooth Grinding)

This can cause headaches and jawaches. Many people suffer with the above and think it is normal, but this can be improved or prevented.

X-Rays

Will show less obvious decay between the teeth at the very early stage. These should be done once a year.

Dental Sealants

One of the most effective forms of preventative dentistry is the use of fissure sealants, especially recommended for children. This is a clear plastic coating which is painted onto the surface of the back teeth, it helps prevents the formation of cavities in pit and fissures of teeth.

Fluoride Treatment

The application of fluoride in different forms can strengthen the enamel of your teeth to prevent decay. Your dentist will administer treatment or show you what to do at home.
